ECOPASS

A pollution charge to lower emissions in the city of Milan

What is the Ecopass?

Ecopass is the name for the city toll that drivers of certain privately owned motor vehicles must pay to enter the centre of the city of Milan, known as the “Limited Traffic Zone” (Zona di Traffico Limitato) ZTL - Cerchia dei Bastioni. The Ecopass is mandatory for categories of vehicles with the highest pollution output.

Ecopass Area (Cerchia dei Bastioni)

The circle of the Bastioni is a central area that is basically aligned with the ancient city walls. The 43 entry points are constantly monitored with video cameras which are linked to an information centre that can read a the license plate of a vehicle as it enters the zone, verify the vehicle’s Ecopass category in a database, and then check to see if payment has been made or signal the violation.

Goals

  • Reduce pollution
  • Safeguard the health of citizens
  • Improve the quality of life in the city
  • Reduce the daily emissions of fine particles by 30%
  • Reduce the number of cars entering the Cerchia dei Bastioni by 10%
